Resolve a storage upgrade request

A freelance designer reports slow app launches and a nearly full PC. The upgrade must retain current projects and a photo archive. Review the inventory, choose sufficient compatible storage, and define evidence for accepting the migration.

Decision 1

Read the inventory

A healthy 1,000 GB HDD is 960 GB full. The board supports a 2.5-inch SATA SSD. A USB drive contains the only copy of older photos. The designer has no tested backup.

Lesson notes

Use this checklist to prepare for the final quiz.

Key ideas

  • Storage is the long-term library for saved data.
  • Capacity, speed, interface, endurance, and safety are separate decisions.
  • SSDs usually improve responsiveness because they find data quickly.
  • Backups protect the user, not just the device.
  • Drive upgrades should start with data protection and fit checks.

Check your understanding

  • Can you explain storage as a library?
  • Can you compare SSDs and hard drives simply?
  • Can you explain why free space matters?
  • Can you describe a safe first step for a failing drive?
