Investigate

The synced folder is empty

A marketing team deletes a campaign folder and the deletion reaches both synced laptops. The campaign assets are due today. Use the backup records to restore the missing work while preserving unrelated files edited after the snapshot.

Decision 1

Locate the recoverable copy

Both synced folders are empty. The backup report says an independent versioned destination has a snapshot from 08:00. The deleted work existed at 08:00.

Lesson notes

Keep recoverable copies in separate locations so one failure cannot erase important work.

What a backup should do

A backup should protect against drive failure, accidental deletion, theft, damage, and bad updates. A sync folder can help, but it may also sync mistakes unless version history is available.

  • Keep important data in more than one place.
  • Test that important files can be restored.
  • Do not wait for failure to create the first backup.

Failing drive priority

If a drive may be failing, protect data first. Stop unnecessary writes, copy important files, and escalate when the data matters more than the hardware.
