Calculate

Schedule an SSD replacement before projects run out of room

A video editor uses a 1,000 GB SSD for work and games: 120 GB OS/apps, 380 GB projects, 150 GB games. Projects grow 25 GB/month; the editor requires 200 GB free. Host writes average 60 GB/day for 365 days. In decimal units, calculate growth capacity, months remaining, and annual writes.

Lesson notes

Reserve working space for updates, temporary files, maintenance, and expected growth.

Capacity planning

Choose capacity based on the data the user has now and what they are likely to add. Photos, games, videos, and project files grow quickly.

  • Leave free space for updates and maintenance.
  • Separate must-keep data from easy-to-reinstall apps.
  • Do not plan a drive that starts nearly full.

Endurance in plain language

SSD endurance is like a write budget. Most everyday users will not burn through it quickly, but heavy recording, scratch disks, and constant writes need better planning.

Worked example

Inputs: 1000 GB planning capacity: 120 GB OS/apps, 380 GB projects, 150 GB games; required reserve 20%.

Task: Calculate occupied/free space and growth before crossing the reserve.

Check the reasoning

650 GB occupied; 350 GB free; 200 GB reserve; 150 GB growth remaining before crossing it.

Advertised decimal capacity and binary OS reporting differ. This reserve is a scenario assumption, not a universal SSD rule.
