Build and test

Add storage to an editing PC

An editor wants an NVMe working drive while keeping the SATA archive available and the GPU at x16. The manual says M2_1 preserves x16 and all SATA, M2_2 preserves x16 but disables SATA_3, and M2_3 preserves SATA but reduces the GPU to x8. Plan both drive connections before installation; isolate power before any physical change.

Conflict index (2 means archive port disabled)—

Change choices to compare results, then check the requirements.

  • Archive port remains usable
  • GPU retains the required x16 route
Lesson notes

PCIe links can share resources with other connectors. Read the manual to identify supported simultaneous configurations.

Why lane sharing matters

Adding an M.2 drive can sometimes disable a SATA port or change how another slot runs. This is normal board design, but it surprises builders who skip the manual.

  • Read storage and expansion footnotes.
  • Plan GPU and storage together.
  • Do not assume every connector works at full speed at the same time.

Chipset in plain language

The chipset helps provide extra connection options like USB, storage, and expansion support. It is part of why two boards with the same CPU socket can offer different features.

Worked example

Inputs: Supplied manual: using M2_2 disables SATA_3. Existing data drive uses SATA_3; SATA_1 remains available.

Task: Show the conflict and a plan preserving the data drive.

Check the reasoning

M2_2 and SATA_3 conflict in this layout. Verify backups, then move the SATA cable to supported SATA_1 with power isolated, or choose another supported slot.

Lane sharing varies by model/CPU. Confirm boot order; never erase or initialize the existing data drive.

M2_2 occupiedShared routingSATA_3 disabled
Example manual rule: M2_2 disables shared port SATA_3. Move the SATA drive to supported SATA_1 or choose another supported M.2 slot. Back up data and isolate power before cable changes. Arrows show the configuration consequence. Exact sharing depends on board, revision, and CPU; check the manual footnotes.
